As the way we work continues to evolve, is the 9-to-5 workday still relevant? Modern work is about managing energy, not time.
It often feels that our work days are more like 5-to-9 since our smartphones tether us to work.
- More email is read on mobile than on desktop.
- 35% of Millennials actually work every day of their paid time off and 4 in 10 workers habitually don’t use all of their vacation.
- 54% of people read email on their smartphone just before they go to bed.
- 49% of people read email on their smartphone immediately when they wake up.
Perhaps these statistics reveal how bad our workaholism has gotten or maybe they reveal our growing desire for more work-life integration to work wherever we want and when we are most productive.
In either case it’s important to not confuse busyness with productivity. To do so we must develop systems and a process to keep us focused and engaged while working. Consider the 3 alternate working patterns highlighted at the end of this infographic.
