“We don’t have a choice on whether we do social media, the choice is how well we do it." ~Erik Qualman. Erik, the international keynote speaker, entrepreneur, and best selling author, highlights some of today's most wowing culture shifts and social media statistics in this latest version of one of the world’s most watched social media video series. See the last version here.
Erik serves up some uber thought provoking statistics. I put some additional context around the stats that I found most influential.
- Over 50% of the world’s population is under 30 years old. Change will continue to accelerate at unparalleled speed as the 80 million Millennials enter into decision making roles, as they become the generation with the greatest spending power by 2018, and as more Digital Natives demand commerce, communication, and work be more digital.
- 53% of Millennials would rather lose their sense of smell than their technology. For Millennials, tech is an integral part of their life. They cannot remember a day when their mobile device was more than an arms reach away. Deny them their tech and they will resent you. Neglect a digital presence and they’ll ignore you.
- More people own a mobile device than a toothbrush. Clearly our hygiene has become second fiddle to technology.
- Each day 20% of the terms typed into Google have never been searched before. Answers are finger flicks or a voice recognition away. We no longer have to wait for parents, teachers, or reporters to deliver the information we need. The amount of change we are and will experience is like nothing before. It’s crucial to remain agile in your thinking and skill set.
- The LinkedIn age limit has been lowered to 13. Personal branding has become a must. Your LinkedIn profile and digital reputation will be the new resume. The emerging workforce will have a transparent and searchable work record…will you?
- Grandparents are the fastest growing demographic on Twitter. Social media has become fully accepted as an exceptional form of communication. But buckle up for more change and disruption as newer social networks begin to emerge as younger generations look to switch to platforms that are not saturated with late adopters and older generations.
- The average person has a 0:07 attention span vs the 0:08 average attention span of a goldfish. Undivided attention no longer exists. Right or wrong this is the new reality. Deal with it. Alter your communications and marketing accordingly. And for anyone that wants to make an impression, give someone 30 seconds of your attention.
- Goodbye 4P’s of marketing: Product / Place / Price / Promotion. Hello 4 C’s of digital: Creating / Curating / Connecting / Culture. The 4 P’s are limited, restricted, and finite where as the 4 C’s are limitless, unrestricted, and infinite which are what will win in tomorrow’s high flux market.
